THEY (critics) SAY:
SPRING AWAKENING takes its inspiration from one of literature’s most controversial masterpieces – a work so daring in its depiction of teenage self-discovery, it was banned from the stage and not performed in its complete form in English for nearly 100 years.
I SAY:
I can certainly see why it was banned!!! Lots of teenage discovery...
THEY SAY:
Spring Awakening is a refreshing night of quality theater even for those who don't typically enjoy musicals.
I SAY:
The lady sitting next to us (with the binoculars, short skirt and candy corn painted fingernails) that was rocking out the ENTIRE time would have to disagree- She told me that this is the WORST thing she has ever seen and she sees a lot! (I find it hard to believe she disliked it so much - you should have seen her smiling and swinging around)
THEY SAY:
With an urgent, harrowing alt-rock score by Duncan Sheik ("Barely Breathing"), the Broadway hit that won eight Tonys including Best Musical arrived last night at the Ahmanson Theater in Downtown LA for a month stint as part of its nationwide tour.
I SAY:
So this is what happened to Duncan Sheik, I've been wondering! The live band at the back of the stage was fantastic!
THEY SAY:
Like all good rock n' roll, it's about teenagers discovering their nascent sexuality. The original was banned due to instances of masturbation, abortion, rape, and suicide, before those became daytime TV staples.
I SAY:
Not to mention, sexual initiation, same-sex desires, domestic abuse (some whipping), teen pregnancy, all adults being played by 2 people, the celebrity cradle, singing dog puppet and the song where they flip each other off a lot!
It was super scandalous!!!! - especially the part where my cell phone alarm went off for 15 seconds during the quiet sex in a meadow scene! - Needless to say I was mortified and the patrons around me let me know of their disgust!
Yep, this scene!
