The 11,875 pound sphere that takes the 60 second slide in Times Square is very nautical chic. It mimics the daily time ball drop that took place in world-wide harbors in the 1800's that marked the noon hour for the local seamen so that they could accurately set their cronometers(think longitude). They too, often raised a flagon of wine to celebrate the event. Happy New Year.
